Research Methods in Astrophysics
Undergraduate research is vital to UC Berkeley Astronomy, yet students often lack early computational and professional skills. Astronomy 133 (Research Methods in Astrophysics) bridges this gap through hands-on training in core software (DS9, Astropy, Pandas), advanced statistics (MCMC, Gaussian Processes), and professional workflows (ADS, Overleaf, proposal writing). As the department’s first course to integrate Generative AI into research, Astronomy 133 teaches students to critically and responsibly leverage LLMs alongside statistical rigor and Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR). This inclusive approach empowers a diverse pool of undergraduates to secure and excel in competitive research roles.
Topics
- By the end of this course, students will be able to apply core computational, statistical, and professional methodologies required to execute, manage, and communicate independent astrophysical research. Computational & Technical Proficiency: · Implement maintainable, reproducible code in Python and Mathematica, incorporating command-line environments, Git/GitHub version control (if there is time), and responsible AI-assisted coding practices. · Inspect and process astronomical images and tabular datasets using standard community tools (e.g., SAOImage DS9). Data Analysis & Statistical Modeling · Calculate and propagate experimental and observational uncertainties across complex data processing pipelines. · Construct and execute statistical models using advanced parameter estimation techniques, including least-squares, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling, and Gaussian Processes (GPs). · Design publication-quality data visualizations that accurately and clearly convey complex multidimensional trends and error bounds. Scientific Critical Thinking & Communication · Deconstruct peer-reviewed astrophysics literature and academic seminar talks to isolate primary hypotheses, methodologies, and key findings. · Draft concise scientific prose, including initial drafts of observational telescope proposals and formal research papers. Research Management, Ethics, & Professional Readiness · Scope and structure an astrophysical research project from initial problem definition to final deliverable. · Apply standards of Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR), specifically regarding data integrity, authorship, intellectual honesty, and the ethical boundaries of generative AI tools. · Assemble competitive application materials (cover letters, research statements, CVs) tailored for undergraduate research opportunities, fellowship programs, and graduate admissions.
