Probability and Risk Analysis for Civil Engineers

3 credits · Undergraduate

Modern civil and environmental engineers must make predictions and design decisions under uncertainty, whether analyzing structural safety, estimating environmental risks, or modeling the reliability of engineered systems. This course establishes the probabilistic and inferential foundations underlying infrastructure reliability, performance-based engineering, and risk analysis. Students learn how to represent, propagate, and update uncertainty in engineering systems, connecting classical probability theory with modern computational and AI-based modeling. While examples emphasize infrastructure resilience, the underlying principles are broadly applicable across engineering domains.
