CSOL 203
Climate Solutions Technology
This course will survey the major options available for mitigating the impacts of climate change, including removal and sequestration, with attention to technology as well as the use of natural sinks. The focus of the course is on understanding the feasibility of each option from a scientific, engineering and techno-economic point of view, and will critically examine the role these technologies play in enabling a just transition to a low carbon economy.
Topics
- Demonstrate “climate solutions literacy,” including knowledge of global energy and materials flows, patterns of land use, and existing carbon sources and sinks. Describe technological climate solutions across the broad categories of emissions mitigation, emissions removal and storage, and radiation management. Analyze climate solutions according to their technical potential (including geophysical feasibility, technological readiness, materials availability, and potential for scale) and economic potential (including current and projected capital, operating and variable costs) of climate solutions. Evaluate social, political and business opportunities and barriers for climate solutions by identifying key ENGINEERING & TECH stakeholders, their interests, and what power they have (or don’t have) to affect climate solutions pathways.
