An Introduction to Sports Analytics and Sports Economics
This class provides an introduction to the analysis of competitive sports using basic tools from probability, statistics and economics. Analytics are now routinely used to make decisions regarding player recruitment and compensation, in game tactical decisions, and even policy decisions regarding league structure and the rules of play. This class will introduce some key developments in this area as well as provide a foundation supporting independent analysis. Topics will include, among others, an introduction to methods for assessing athlete and team quality, developing prediction models for competition outcomes, and understanding the labor market for athletes.
