Indigenous Students and Education: Critical Issues and Possibilities

3 credits · Undergraduate

This course critically examines themes that are central to understanding the academic achievement and attainment of Indigenous students in K-12 and higher education. We will examine the present-day and historical government policies that have influenced the education of Indigenous students. We will also analyze the way notions of “culture” have been deployed in research on Indigenous education. Throughout the course, attention will be paid to Indigenous epistemologies and their inclusion/exclusion from the education of Indigenous students. We will also pay particular attention to the way Indigenous people are represented in education and the consequences this has for broader perceptions of Indigenous people.
