Microwave and Wireless Measurements
Hands-on laboratory course in microwave and wireless measurement techniques. Topics include vector network analysis, S-parameter characterization, signal integrity, noise figure, spectrum analysis, antenna gain and radiation patterns, radar cross-section, and wireless communications measurements. Students use professional RF instrumentation to characterize devices and systems from DC to millimeter-wave frequencies. Final project in one of four tracks: RF front-end, antennas, wireless communications, or radar. (EE 117B: undergraduate; EE 217B: graduate with additional analysis.)
Topics
- Operate vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and noise figure meters safely and proficiently at frequencies from DC to millimeter-wave. Perform one-port and two-port VNA calibrations (SOLT, waveguide, TRL) and critically evaluate measurement uncertainty and systematic errors. Characterize signal integrity of high-speed interconnects, including TDR impedance profiling, eye diagram analysis, crosstalk measurement, and equalization of lossy channels. Measure noise figure using the Y-factor method, calculate cascaded noise figure for receiver chains, and relate antenna noise temperature to system sensitivity. Quantify nonlinear distortion (IIP3, harmonic levels), phase noise, and EVM/BER in wireless transmitter and receiver systems. Measure antenna gain, EIRP, far-field radiation patterns, near-field distributions, impedance matching, and mutual coupling in anechoic and open-range environments. Implement and interpret FMCW radar measurements, including range-Doppler processing, polarimetric RCS, and 3-D ISAR imaging. Design, execute, and present a complete RF measurement project as part of a team, demonstrating the ability to formulate measurement goals, select appropriate instrumentation, analyze data rigorously, and communicate results clearly.
