Introduction to Digital Communications

4 credits · Undergraduate

Introduction to the fundamental principles underlying the analysis, design and optimization of analog and digital communication systems. Topics include Analog and Digital baseband and passband modulation techniques, receiver design, source coding, error-correcting codes. Examples will be taken from existing communication systems such as : broadcast Radio, cell-phones, RFID, Wifi etc. The course will heavily use linear systems and Fourier techniques. Emphasis will be on capturing and decoding real signals using software defined radios (SDR).

Topics

Students will learn to: Describe bandpass signals using complex baseband representation Modulate and decode Analog modulation signals with AM and FM Modulate and decode Digital modulation signals with PAM, PSK, QAM and FM Design optimal receivers for digital modulation Code and decode using convolutional codes and block codes
