Readings in Ge’ez (Classical Ethiopic)
This course provides students with an opportunity to develop and refine their skills in Ge’ez (or Classical Ethiopic) through close readings of selected texts from the Kebra Nagast. The main task of students will be to prepare assigned readings by translating the selected texts and providing grammatical analyses. Students will also have the opportunity to master the Ge’ez script and develop their vocabulary by reading Ge’ez texts aloud in class. Course readings and exercises will further address the various questions involved in the study of the Kebra Nagast, including its literary themes, textual history, dating, provenance, and the influential role the text has played across several centuries of Ethiopian history.
