Community Geography: People, Place, and Power
This course introduces students to the field of Community Geography. We start with the foundations. What is the public? What is community? Why would we want to do research in the name of community, who are we to do so, and how can we do so ethically? Next, we look closely at recent work in Community Geography, and think carefully about the methods employed and the forms of research produced. In doing so, we learn how to design community engaged research projects in Geography and related fields that can not only uncover issues impacting various communities (issues like neocolonial land use; structural racism; wage theft; environmental injustice, etc.) but, crucially, help respond to them in powerful and creative ways.
