GEOG 179
Indigenous Placemaking
This course turns to indigenous geographers and related scholars to explore some of the many physical, legal, political, cultural, artistic, and other ways that Indigenous peoples shape space, primarily but not exclusively in the US context. In the face of settler colonialism’s enforced forgetting, we read primarily indigenous authors along with some allied scholars in order to refuse to forget. The course ends by looking at the recent history of indigenous places and struggles that might inspire a more hopeful future: Alcatraz, Standing Rock, #LandBack, and beyond.
