Fundamentals of Geographic Thought and Research

5 credits · Graduate

This course is the first in a required three-course sequence for doctoral students in Geography. The course has three core aims. First, to help students see, think, and write geographically--that is, to interpret the making and meaning of physical and human landscapes. We will do so by exploring various concepts, theories, and methodologies in geography, focusing on nature-society relations. Second, to cultivate skills for conducting geographic research. We will do this through collaborative discussion of, and curiosity about, the range of approaches to geographic inquiry. Third, the course will foster cohort building through collective field trips and introducing students to the practices and expectations of scholarly work.
