4 credits · Undergraduate

Paper tigers, running dogs, and the spiritual atom bomb: the world of Chairman Mao Zedong is colorful, confusing, and above all controversial. This course opens multiple and sometimes contradictory perspectives on the infamous leader of China's socialist revolution. We will navigate the tumultuous twentieth century of Chinese and global history, taking the Great Helmsman himself as our guide; secondary sources provide orientation and course corrections along the way.
