Herpetology with Laboratory

5 credits · Undergraduate

This course offers comprehensive coverage of reptile and amphibian biology. For each of the major groups of amphibians and reptiles, students will learn about worldwide diversity, geographic distributions, morphology, reproductive biology, and ecomorphology, including unique group-specific topics such as the convergent evolution of venom-delivery systems in snakes, jumping biomechanics in frogs, etc. The laboratory materials focus on (1) worldwide taxonomic and ecomorphological diversity, as well as (2) the identification and distributions of all California species. Field trips allow students to observe California amphibians and reptiles in their native habitats, while learning the field techniques that allow these observations.
