Environmental and Climate Justice in Urban Studies
This course examines the multiple histories and contexts that environmental (in)justices operate within in urban studies. It also traces these influences into the movements for climate justice and, increasingly, disaster justice.
Topics
- To accomplish this, the course is broken into two parts: 1: Core Histories and Theories of Environmental and Climate Justice 2: Current Issues in Environmental and Climate Justice Through these two parts of the semester, students will not only learn core concepts, theories, and movements, but apply this knowledge to weekly case study analyses and class discussions. This course is thus formatted as a lecture (generally on Tuesdays) with accompanying experimental in-class workshops (generally on Thursdays).
- From this, the course contains the following learning objectives: 1: Introduce core theories, concepts, policies, and movements that underpin contemporary environmental and climate justice studies and movements in urban studies. 2: Examine the core issue areas defining contemporary environmental and climate justice in urban studies. 3: Gain both quantitative and qualitative skills through case-based analyses of environmental and climate injustices.
