ENGAGING CULTURAL LANDSCAPES
This course is premised on the idea that landscape architects and environmental planners have a role to play in imagining, shaping, and creating more just landscapes. Intended to help students critically and creatively engage the intersections of social and environmental (in)justice through the cultural landscape, students in this course will examine the complex and iterative spatial relationships between historical and ongoing forms of oppression while keeping focus on the possibilities of justice, joy and belonging.
Topics
- Students will interrogate cultural landscapes at the geographical scales in which we primarily work in the CED focusing on understanding such methods of engagement as critical cartography, collage, and data stories. As such, the questions we explore about injustice will be directed toward the work of planners, architects, landscape architects and designers as taking part in spatializing justice. Students in this course will complete visual and critical analyses of cultural landscapes, interrogating methods, representation, and multiple ways of knowing as a foundation for more just speculative futures.
