Literary Mongolian I

This course introduces students to Literary Mongolian, the written language of the Mongol empire, Mongolian Buddhism, early twentieth century Mongolian governments, and diverse Mongolian peoples. For roughly the first half of the course, students learn basic skills, the language’s phonology and grammar, the vertical script, and a standard system of transcription. During this period, modest assignments and an examination shore up these fundamentals. Over the second half of the course, students immerse themselves reading texts. Although texts may be drawn to suit student interest, the standard course repertoire consists of Mongolian Buddhist literature
