Politics and Development in the Global South
This course examines how politics affects development in the Global South. First, we will examine state institutions and the enduring effects of natural resources, conflict, and historical legacies on present-day development. We will then explore the role of elections and political participation in shaping public goods provision, and how politicians leverage development and security for political gain. Finally, we will focus on a broad variety of development interventions, covering areas such as conflict, education, and gender. Readings will draw primarily from the political science and economics literature and concepts are grounded in case analyses from the Global South.
