Immigration Control and the Criminalization of Immigration in the United States

2 credits · Undergraduate

This course is an introduction to the complex dynamics of US immigration policy. Intended and unintended consequences will be examined alongside sociopolitical factors driving the expansion of punitive responses to the movement of bodies across borders. Historical foundations of “deterrent” policies will be considered, including the influence of racism and discrimination in the pre- and post-civil rights eras. Issues of criminality, mobility, national security, privatization, and reform will also be explored. Informed by the NASW Code of Ethics, this course adopts a critical, action-oriented approach relevant to those interested in practice with individuals and families, community organizing, legislative advocacy, and beyond.
