Biomedical Engineering Methods: From Biological Discovery to Clinical Practice
This is a core graduate-level course designed to develop essential presentation, writing, research, and teaching skills through hands-on experiences in lecture preparation, implementation of innovative teaching techniques, and oral/written science communication. Student-led lectures and journals clubs will survey widely used and emerging methods in biomedical research and clinical diagnostics. Each lecture will highlight how research methodologies could be applied in future research projects and will provide students with background on clinical methods they may observe during their clinical immersion term. Discussion sections will provide additional preparatory sessions for the BME summer immersion program, give opportunities for collaborative working sessions with peers, and allow for further scientific communication skill development.
Topics
- Describe current research methods used in biomedical research and identify resources on campus to conduct such experiments.
- Explore both commonly used and new emerging clinical methods used to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease.
- Apply active critical reading and questioning skills to reviewing scientific literature to efficiently learn new concepts.
- Coherently summarize and clearly present (in oral or written form) current knowledge in a research field to a variety of audiences.
- Initiate and develop your own ideas for original research.
