Neurochemical Basis of Human Behavior
This course will focus on the complex interactions between neurochemicals and their receptors (pharmacodynamics) that drive human behavior. It will provide an overview of the principles of neurotransmission of chemicals as well as how alterations in their normal function can manifest in pathological behavior/mind processes.
Topics
- Explain the biological mechanisms of neurotransmission and how neurochemical signaling influences human behavior, cognition, and emotion.
- Analyze the relationship between neurochemical systems and behavioral disorders, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, dementia, substance use disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
- Evaluate scientific evidence from primary and secondary sources related to psychopharmacology and behavioral neuroscience.
- Apply neurochemical principles to real-world problems involving human health, mental illness, treatment interventions, and public policy.
- Communicate scientific ideas effectively in written and oral formats using evidence-based arguments appropriate for diverse audiences.
- Integrate biological, psychological, and social perspectives when considering the causes and treatment of behavioral and mental health conditions.
