ANTH 1125
Anthropological Eye
What is the role of vision in the modern discipline of anthropology? Are ways of seeing cultural? What is the relationship between seeing and knowledge production? In this course, we will explore competing cultural and political notions of vision, and learn about ‘seeing’ as a theoretical approach, a technique, as art form. What are the modern ideas behind vision and the gaze? We will look at film, photography, and museum displays alongside ethnographies that showcase these debates. Through visual and written means, we will explore how power, mutual exchange, and difference is expressed through the metaphor of the visual.
