Media Worlds and Technologies

3 Credits · Level: Undergraduate

Humans use myriad types of media to build our relationships, support economic and cultural exchanges, and transform our environments. Anthropologists study what people think and say about the media we create and use, but also research how established and emerging media technologies are embedded in our daily lives. This course questions universalizing assumptions about what watching TV, sharing a digital photo, or going to the movies means globally by researching the production and consumption of films and video, radio, news media, photographs, digital data and social media platforms in diverse media worlds. Humans in particular historical moments and cultural spaces creatively incorporate globally-circulating media technologies to powerfully shape their media worlds.
