ANTH 3340
The Anthropology of Love
"Love” is a social construct - historically, politically, and socially produced. De-centering Eurocentric notions of love, this course introduces students to 1) love as a feeling, concept, and practice through religion, activism, politics; 2) the emergence of the romantic, conjugal couple in Europe alongside the modern notion of the family, private property, and capitalism; 3) how ideas of love and autonomy are domesticated around the world and 4) the attending violence that comes with these efforts; 5) radical philosophies of love as ethical and liberatory project with new horizons.
