Indian Ocean Research Colloq
The coastal regions of Kerala and Goa in India provide a rich environment for the study of divergences and convergences in their historical and cultural experiences, and relations between India and the wider Indian Ocean. In this intensive research seminar, we will examine the histories that have shaped these regions by researching their maritime trade, colonization, literary explorations, and ethnographic narratives. Through an interdisciplinary lens, the seminar will allow the students to delve deeper into the intricacies of human experiences while considering the specificities of each community’s culture, art and literary imagination. Admission is by departmental approval (send the professor an account of why you want to take this class, along with any related experiences, skills, or classes). Students in the class will travel to Kerala and Goa (exact dates TBC, costs covered by GU) in March or April 2026 as part of the class. This course is co -taught with ENGL4219 and HIST4219 courses in Washington DC with Professors Parsons and Chakravarthy.
