Post-Apartheid S. African Lit

While we will start in the so-called “interregnum” period before the fall of apartheid in South Africa, the bulk of the time will be given over to reading and discussing the extraordinary explosion of post-apartheid novels, poetry, non-fiction, and plays. Authors covered will included JM Coetzee, Athol Fugard, Phaswane Mphe, CA Davids, Zoe Wicomb, and others, and the course will trace literary interventions into the politics, ethics, and aesthetics (successful and failed) of building a new nation after the violence of apartheid.
