Private Equity

1.5 Credits · Level: Undergraduate

Entrepreneurial Finance and Private Equity will explore the explosive growth in this industry and demystify the tools that private equity professionals use to evaluate, purchase, manage, and sell small and midsized businesses. The course will provide an overview of how private equity firms are structured and how they operate. You will learn how to value a business, how to negotiate the terms of the purchase, how to choose among numerous securities and financing structures, and how to successfully exit the business. The course will also explore the complications and problems that often occur between the buying and selling of a business. A basic understanding of financial statements is helpful, but all the financial concepts covered in this course will be taught in class. Course material will be presented primarily through case studies and selected readings. Class participation is important as students will learn from each other as they discuss the problems presented in each case. This course will be beneficial to anyone interested in building, managing, investing in, or buying a business someday either as an entrepreneur or as a private equity professional.
