Polit resilience/Social Ident
The course explores what political resilience stands for, and how social identities play a critical role in determining political resilience; particularly how collective identities are shaped, maintained, and deployed. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, we will examine key dimensions of identity, modes, and strategies of inclusion and exclusion, forms of “identity politics,” and questions of intersectionality (the overlapping of identity categories, as for race and gender). Course materials will span everything from theoretical approaches to human displacement and identity mobilization to social transformation, rise of nationalism and how marginalized groups navigate and impact political landscapes, and how resilience can manifest differently across socio-political contexts. Underpinned by theoretical frameworks, students will engage with a mix of historical and contemporary case studies, and will be equipped to critically assess how identities contribute to both resilience and vulnerability in political systems.
