Morphology

3 Credits · Level: Undergraduate

This course will explore both the unity and diversity of the world’s languages through morphology (i.e. the study of how words are formed). Taking the perspective of scientists encountering an unfamiliar language for the first time, we will learn to morphologically analyze foreign language data, uncover linguistic patterns, and understand the grammatical relationships that can be encoded cross-linguistically. With this knowledge of word structure as a foundation, we will further investigate how morphological patterns might be explained through linguistic theory and psychology.
