Language Education
This course examines the complex interplay between language and education from a wide range of sociolinguistic approaches, including pragmatics, interactional sociolinguistics, ethnography, anthropological linguistics, conversation analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, and multimodal discourse analysis. We will consider how educational norms and values are enacted through language use in classroom interactions, instructional activities and materials, curricula, assessments, and policies. In addition to theoretical and topical readings and class discussions, students will take part in hands-on data analysis workshops and discussion leading tasks on topics related to the course. The course will culminate in a final research project, in which students will further research a topic of their choice related to the course and present their findings in a formal paper and presentation.
