Human-Comp Inter: Disc Persp
This course explores the intersection of discourse analysis and human-computer interaction. Drawing on ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, and interactional sociolinguistics, we will investigate how insights into human social interaction from these fields can be used to improve our understanding of the ways in which human users engage with technology such as conversational AI (i.e. chatbots and voice assistants), automated vehicles, and the like. In addition to reviewing assigned readings and participating in class discussions, you will engage in self-directed research on relevant topics. This course will culminate in a final empirical research project, in which you will research a topic of your choice and present your findings in an academic paper.
