The Cultural Legacy of Drugs
Over the centuries drug use has been conceptualized in many ways; a spiritual aid, a medicine, a coping mechanism, a disease, even a moral failing. This course seeks to examine the relationship human beings have had with mind-altering drugs, both individually and societally. We will ponder questions such as: Why has there never been a historical “drug-free” society? Is it possible to achieve a drug-free society in modern times? Is it necessary for humans to alter their consciousness.
