Sculpture and Health

1 Credit · Level: Undergraduate

Sculpture and Health have been related across the millennia as humanity gained understanding about how the body functions. By making three dimensional forms in the likenesses of bodies, human beings find ways to express their knowledge and beliefs about the world in which they live as well as problem solve to advance the health and wellbeing of their communities. This course will explore how sculpture making is related to health and healing both historically and contemporarily. Students will be able to see a vast array of sculptures incorporating images of the body to gain understanding about how gender/race/social status are presented over time and across cultures. Students will meet sculptors and be sculptors themselves through individual and class projects. Clinicians and pre-clinicians will guide health related discussion and inform sculpture designs. The course work will conclude with a class exhibition and a reflective paper describing the sculpture making experience as it relates to health.
