PHIL 3211
Themes in Critical Theory
Critical theory is the name given to the type of social and political philosophy started in Frankfurt in the 1930’s. As Rainer Forst puts it, critical theory attempts to establish “a connection between reflection in philosophy and in social science informed by an interest in emancipation.” In this particular iteration of the course, we will pick up critical theory in its most recent formulations, starting with the work of Jürgen Habermas and moving on through some of the writings of Axel Honneth, Rahel Jaeggi, and Rainer Forst.
