PHIL 4801
Sartre
Sartre combined a career as a philosopher, playwright, novelist, journalist and activist. His early work for all practical purposes invented the category of existentialism in philosophy (although he did not coin the term or the idea). In this class, we will read large excerpts from Sartre’s two main published philosophical works: Being and Nothingness, and The Critique of Dialectical Reason. We will also read some of his later works on ethics which remained unfinished and unpublished in his lifetime.
