Postcommunist Pol Systems
This course examines the historical experience and current trajectories of post-Communist states, societies and economies. The course takes a comparative, historical, and broadly political economy approach to comparative Communisms and post-Communisms. We will focus on three central themes: (1) the origins of Communist political and economic systems in Europe; (2) the causes behind their decline and collapse in the late 1980s and early 1990s; (3) the making of post-Communist states and economies and the divergence of regimes into democratic and non-democratic types.
