ST: Race, Class, and Gender
Special Topics: This course entails a sociological examination of intersectionality, which has been described as both a theory and a means for social change. Starting with the social categories race, social class, and gender, the course entails looking at topics (such as family, education, work, and health) that demonstrate these categories' simultaneous influences on individuals' identities, interactions with others, and experiences within institutions. Turning to sociological literature, research, and contemporary debates, we'll first ask, "What is intersectionality?" and "What are the best ways to understand intersectional systems of inequality for members of both marginalized and privileged groups?" We will also extend the intersectional approach to include ethnicity, sexuality, religion, and nation.
