SPAN 1005

Spanish for Speakers Rom Lang

3 Credits · Level: Undergraduate

This course provides an accelerated introduction to Spanish grammar and conversation for native or proficient speakers of French, covering in one semester what is normally covered in the two-semester sequence of Introductory Spanish I and II. Upon successful completion of all requirements, students will be prepared to enroll in Intermediate Spanish I (SPAN 021) or Intensive Intermediate Spanish (SPAN 032). Attention will be focused on speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and readings, music, videos, and films will be used to introduce students to the history, culture, and contemporary life of various Spanish-speaking countries. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to interact with the students enrolled in French for Spanish Speakers (FREN-009), which will allow students in both classes additional practice with the language, complementing what is learned in class and at home. The course will be presented in Spanish and aimed towards students with advanced French skills and little-to-no previous experience with the Spanish language. Full working proficiency in French is, therefore, a necessary prerequisite, as the method of instruction, in-class activities, and required texts will often rely on French as a pivot language in order to promote specific learning paths for easier access to Spanish grammar and vocabulary. By exploring the similarities and differences between the two languages, the course is designed to allow bilingual students to take full advantage of their prior language experience, reinforcing their knowledge of French while working towards rapid proficiency in Spanish as a third language.
