CALL - Adv. Span./Public Prof
Advanced Spanish for the Public Professions - CALL This course is designed for students at the Advanced 1 Level to further develop Spanish fluency in the areas of oral comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking as preparation for work in the fields of international affairs, public policy, government, and law. This course will use a combination of classroom, cultural, and experiential learning opportunities in DC (such as excursions to museums, embassies, and cultural and political centers throughout Washington) to improve students’ accuracy and effective communication in Spanish through exposure to daily, practical situations relevant to the broader field of public service. The primary components of the course will be vocabulary, language awareness, and student participation, along with the incorporation of film, art, and current events to aid in the development of students’ understanding of the histories and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. As part of the course, students will have the opportunity to engage with recent Georgetown graduates currently working in the State Department as well as for think tanks, non-profits, and international consulting firms. This course will meet at Georgetown’s Downtown Campus (the Capitol Applied Learning Labs) and is open to both Main Campus and CALL students. Following this semester-long course, should students wish to continue Spanish study on the Main Campus, a placement test will be required to determine the level.
