Other Spains
Other Spains. Reading/Watching Spanish National Identity from the Margins The end of the Franco dictatorship (1975), and the new democracy in Spain open the door to the expression of perspectives and voices on the cultural scene, that were traditionally pushed to the margins. In this course we will study those expressions that were considered ‘Other’ and that now provide a complex picture of what constitutes Spanish identity in the 21 st Century. Through the analysis of different materials (literature, film, comic books, plastic art) we will explore how these groups (Roma, immigrants, racialized communities) have constructed and negotiated their position within the dominant discourse. This course aims to widen the understanding of Spain as a diverse, multifaceted space in construction in which national identity is being questioned. Despite far from this being a balanced dialogue, there is a polyphonic conversation on the Spanish culture scene, and students will be exposed to them. Learning Goals Improve students’ academic oral and written skills in Spanish Develop a critical look when approaching cultural products, texts, etc. Cultivate analytical skills Give students an understanding of Spain as a heterogenous nation Foster an interest in underrepresented voices and perspectives Promote diversity
