SPAN 3294

Race, Gender, Ethncity in LA

3 Credits · Level: Undergraduate

This class will focus on the manner in which the concept of racial mixing, or 'mezcla racial', played a fundamental role during the nation-building process in Latin America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as it reduced groups of people- blacks and indigenous among others- to one single group, thus ignoring racial diversity. Thereafter we will analyze how this idea was contested by contemporary voices whose narratives acknowledged greater racial difference and subjectivity. Throughout the semester we will have the opportunity to discuss a diverse selection of texts, including novels, essays, and anthropological works, in addition to movies and music. This class will be taught in Spanish.
