SPAN 3341

Hispanic Cinema

3 Credits · Level: Undergraduate

This course examines how a number of important Spanish films since the 1940s to the present--from Raza (1941) to El laberinto del fauno (2006)—have dealt with issues of national identity. Against Raza’s background (the template for a Francoist kitsch that envisioned a new, fascist Spain emerging from the civil war), this course will focus on the various attempts by directors such as Nieves Conde, García Berlanga, Buñuel, Martin Patino, Erice, Almodóvar, De la Iglesia, and Del Toro, among others, to oppose this Francoist kitsch first embodied by Raza.
