SPAN 4175
Lat Amer Historical Novel
The traditional Latinamerican historical novel dates from the nineteenth century, yet during the last third of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first centuries there has been a great production of novels whose subject matter is historical. These new historical novels revaluate not only the historical past but also propose a new historical construction, which enriches the interepretative posibilities of the Latin American reality. In this course we read and analyse eight novels that exemplify three moments of Latin Amerian history: 1. Discovery, conquest and colonization, 2. Independence and the formation of the nation, and 3. Twentieth century issues and problems.
