SPAN 4186
Native Peoples of the Americas
How do ethnographers write about Native people in an era of indigenous organizing and the appearance of a layer of Native intellectuals who are themselves able to write ethnography? This course will look at the ethnography of the indigenous peoples of North America, Mesoamerica, and South America, paying special attention to how non-Native and Native scholars write about these populations. The course will also explore Native films and will involve visits to the National Museum of the American Indian, which has a series of permanent community-curated exhibits.
