Climate Fiction

3 Credits · Level: Graduate

This course examines climate fiction as a vital arena where contemporary literature confronts the profound challenges posed by anthropogenic planetary warming. With primary attention to Latin American writers, we will investigate how fiction imagines the cascading disruptions of global heating through genres including eco-gothic, dystopia, speculative fiction, and the New Weird. Drawing on critical frameworks from the environmental humanities and ecocriticism, we will analyze how literary form grapples with the defining problems of climate representation: bridging the gap between intimate bodily experience and geological deep time and making the vast planetary systems that elude ordinary human perception legible.
