Lang Attitudes and Identities
This graduate seminar focuses on sociolinguistic research into Spanish accent variation, language attitudes, and identities. Students explore where our attitudes towards language come from, how they are formed and manifested, and what they may tell us about society. They are introduced to a range of sociolinguistic research methods; study the relationship between language and a diverse array of social identities, including, but not limited to, race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, and sexual orientation; and reflect on the real-world implications of language attitudes on our society as a whole.
