Emerging Markets: Biz Inv

1.5 Credits · Level: Graduate

Emerging markets and developing economies are a diverse set of countries that account for around 85 percent of the world’s population and 45 percent of global GDP. Over the last 20 years they have grown 2 – 3 times faster than advanced economies (US, Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand), albeit from much lower income levels, and current projections from the IMF suggests this trend will continue in the years ahead. Companies around the world and across industries have taken notice of the potential of emerging markets as major new consumer markets, potential sites for production of goods and services, and places to source critical inputs. These countries have rapidly expanding middle class consumers and home to major companies. Asset managers, pension funds, and institutional and retail investors have grown their portfolios of financial investments in emerging markets.
