Queer Theory Religion
How have Christians shaped conversations about purity, pleasure, and pain? This course examines the theological positions and arguments behind some of the most controversial and complicated topics in the Christian tradition surrounding gender, sexuality, identity, and personhood. The course includes a variety of topics, such as biblical treatments of sex, marriage, and women; theological views of personhood and humans-in-relationship (from the patristic, medieval, and modern eras); developments in feminist, womanist, and queer theologies; and, contemporary theological reflections from trans* and intersex persons, as well as the role of churches in addressing sexual assault and trauma. The course aims to situate these academic and ecclesiastical conversations within the contexts of mental, physical, and spiritual health and well-being.
