This course is designed as a survey history of modern China from the late Ming to the present. We will ask some important questions over the course of the semester. When does "modern" China begin? How do we approach modern Chinese history? What are the boundaries of China/Chinese identity? Could these concepts stretch to include the Chinese diaspora?
