HIST 417
American Imaginations of the Middle East
This course will explore the social and cultural histories that link the United States with the countries that compose the "Middle East." We will explore ideas such as imperial ambition, cultural representation, and global migration through the critical lens of Orientalism and the politics of knowledge production. We ask: what events and ideas compose the history of US-Middle East encounters? More importantly, though, we interrogate: How is this history told, and what are its implications?
