Block Party 101: The Power of Social Capital

4 Credits

This class will explore group membership and social capital in societies around the world. Scholars recognize that membership in some associations, clubs, and friend groups can facilitate societal trust, political participation, political knowledge, public goods provision, and even disaster response. However, group membership can also solidify bonds between members to the detriment of “outsiders.” This course explores how social capital affects trust and trustworthiness towards broader society and studies barriers to social capital formation.
